Rasika Duggal, Gulshan Devaiah starrer Little Thomas bags 3 nominations at New York Indian Film Festival; team says, “Hoping for a win”

Little Thomas, the comedy-drama, starring Rasika Duggal and Gulshan Devaiah, has secured three prestigious nominations—Best Actor, Actress, and Best Debut Feature— in the upcoming 25th edition of the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF). Rasika and Gulshan have earned nominations in the acting categories while the Kaushal Oza directorial has also bagged a nomination in the best debut feature film category.

Producers Ranjan Singh (Flip Films) and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap (Good Bad Films)  are set for NYIFF, with two of their films – Little Thomas and Kashyap’s directorial Kennedy – featured in the official lineup.

Rasika Duggal, who plays Jessie Miranda in Little Thomas, said she is “delighted” to be nominated for Best Actress for the comedy-drama, which follows the efforts of a seven-year-old boy to bring his parents together and have a little brother.

“I am grateful that the work is being noted and appreciated, and I am looking forward to the response of the audience when the film is screened at the festival. Audiences at film festivals are discerning, and it is always wonderful to receive their view of the work,” Rasika said.

Gulshan added, “I am excited and happy with the nomination that the NYIFF jury has considered me for as the Best Actor for Little Thomas. Looking forward to the festival and also yes, hoping to win the Best Actor award.”

Kaushal Oza, who had previously worked with Kashyap on That Girl in Yellow Boots and Shaitan, said he was thrilled to return to NYIFF after the world premiere of his short film The Miniaturist of Junagadh at the festival.

“This time I am delighted that ‘Little Thomas’ has been nominated at the same festival for the Best Debut Film… What really puts the cherry on the cake is the nominations for both the actors as well!”

Produced under the banners of Luminoso Pictures, Civic Studios, Flip Films, and Good Bad Films, Little Thomas had its world premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) last year, followed by the Toronto Indian Film Festival and Chandigarh Cine-Vesture.

Set in the Goa of the 90s, the film follows Thomas, the only child of his parents, who desperately wants a little brother. “One day, he is told that to get a baby brother, his parents will have to kiss. Since his quarrelling parents won’t kiss any longer, little Thomas takes it upon himself to make them do the yucky act!” the film’s synopsis read.

SCOOP: Kapil Sharma’s Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 expected to release on the 10th anniversary of the first part; unique multi-faith promotional strategy sparks speculations

Kapil Sharma debuted as a leading actor with Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2015). Thanks to the popularity of the comic actor, plot and the funny scenes, the film was a success at the box office. Now, the makers are ready with the second part, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, and if sources are to be believed, it is expected to release within a few months.

A source told Bollywood Hungama, “The makers are considering multiple dates and one of the dates being seriously looked at is September 26, 2025. There’s not much competition on that day and moreover, the date has an importance. The first part was released exactly ten years ago in that week – September 25, 2015. This has added to the significance of the date.”

The source continued, “A final decision is yet to be taken whether September 26 will be locked as the release date. The makers are clear that they want the best possible date for the film as they are confident of its prospects at the box office.”

Meanwhile, the promotional strategy for Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 has sparked considerable buzz. The makers unveiled four distinct posters, each timed with a different festival—Eid, Ram Navami, Baisakhi and Easter. While the team remains tight-lipped, industry chatter suggests this is more than just a marketing gimmick and could offer clues about the film’s plot.

An insider remarked, “In each poster, Kapil Sharma appears to be getting married in a different religious tradition. This has fuelled speculation that the sequel might revolve around the protagonist marrying women from four different faiths. If true, it could add a quirky and intriguing layer to the story. But as of now, nothing is known for sure and the teaser or trailer will give an idea of this aspect.”

Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon’s first part was directed by Abbas-Mustan; they were also the producers along with Venus. Along with Kapil Sharma, it starred Manjari Fadnnis, Simran Kaur Mundi, Sai Lokur and Elli AvrRam. It was the story of a man who reluctantly gets married thrice. How he manages his three wives, ensuring that they don’t find out the truth, while also dealing with his girlfriend, formed the crux of the film.

Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, meanwhile, is directed by Anukalp Goswami. Abbas-Mustan, this time, serve only as producers along with Venus.

Alia Bhatt, Janhvi Kapoor to join Aishwarya Rai at Cannes Film Festival 2025

The Cannes Film Festival 2025 is set to witness a glamorous Indian presence once again, as Alia Bhatt and Janhvi Kapoor are expected to join the ever-elegant Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on the red carpet of the prestigious international event. Held annually in the scenic French Riviera, the festival this year will not only celebrate global cinema but also showcase a dynamic mix of Indian fashion, heritage, and cinematic talent.

Speaking about the debuts to watch out for this year, we have Alia Bhatt, who has been making waves on the global fashion circuit as she will grace Festival De Cannes for the first time this year. She will be attending the prestigious film festival as the ambassador of the Italian luxury brand Gucci. Known for her chic and contemporary style, Alia’s Cannes debut under Gucci’s banner is expected to merge high fashion with Bollywood charm. This will mark another significant milestone in her expanding international presence.

Adding to the star quotient is Janhvi Kapoor, who will be walking the red carpet for a more cinematic reason. The actress will be attending the premiere of Homebound, along with the team of the film that includes Ishaan Khatter, who plays the male lead along with Vishal Jethwa as well as filmmaker Karan Johar, who is the producer of the film. For the unversed, a few weeks ago, Dharma Productions in collaboration with KJo had shared a post about the film’s premiere in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ Category at the 78th edition of Cannes Film Festival, sparking much excitement among fans.

Meanwhile, veteran actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, a regular at Cannes and one of the most iconic faces on its red carpet, will continue her long-standing association with global beauty brand L’Oréal Paris. Her appearance is highly anticipated each year for its blend of sartorial elegance and red-carpet poise, and 2025 promises to be no different.

The Indian footprint at Cannes this year, however, goes beyond contemporary stars. Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, who had attended the festival in 2009, will attend a special screening of Satyajit Ray’s 1970 classic Aranyer Din Ratri, which is being featured under the Cannes Classics segment. This tribute to Ray’s legacy highlights the enduring global relevance of Indian cinema’s golden era.

Also part of the Indian delegation is filmmaker Payal Kapadia, whose critically acclaimed film All We Imagine As Light continues its journey across international festivals. With a blend of timeless elegance, youthful glamour, and cinematic depth, India’s presence at Cannes 2025 promises to be as radiant as the Riviera sun.

PVR INOX reports 9% box office dip in FY25; Hindi revenues down 26%, Hollywood by 28%

PVR INOX Limited today announced its audited standalone and consolidated financial results for the quarter and the 12 month period ended March 31st, 2025. The box office in FY’25 was impacted by an uneven release calendar, marked by inconsistent content availability across quarters. Both Bollywood and Hollywood underperformed, contributing to a 9% decline in the company’s overall gross box office revenue. Hindi box office collections dropped 26%, primarily due to a 14% reduction in film releases, the absence of major superstar-led titles, and multiple postponements. Hollywood revenues fell by 28%, reflecting the lingering effects of the previous year’s strike and a lackluster tentpole slate. In contrast, Hindi-dubbed films saw a remarkable 153% surge, driven by nationwide hits like Pushpa 2 and Kalki, underscoring a growing audience appetite for large-scale pan-India narratives.

Chhaava emerged as the highest-grossing film in the 4th quarter, earning approximately INR 700 cr at the box office, followed by strong performances from Sankranthiki Vasthunam (Telugu), SkyForce, Empuraan (Malayalam), Daaku Maharaj (Telugu), Game Changer (Telugu), Dragon (Tamil), and Vidaamuyarchi (Tamil). March, in particular, was a subdued month, with Empuraan and Sikandar releasing towards the end of the month. While Empuraan with life time box office of INR 125 crs cemented its place among the highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time, Sikandar with life time collections of INR 130 crs underperformed relative to expectations, especially considering its high-profile cast and production scale.

Despite ongoing industry-wide challenges from a constrained pipeline of Hindi and English releases, the company remained unwavering in delivering on the four strategic priorities outlined at the start of the year. We evolved from passively managing footfalls to actively generating them — a transformation that underscores our proactive approach to audience engagement and demand creation. Our focus on curated re-releases paid off handsomely, adding 7.1 million incremental footfalls and contributing approximately INR 124 crore in gross ticket sales.

The company also celebrated the spirit of cinema through the successful execution of four Cinema Lovers Days and one National Cinema Day, offering tickets at as low as INR 99. These five days alone drew an impressive 3.4 million moviegoers to our cinemas. Building on this success, we launched Blockbuster Tuesdays, a weekly value-driven initiative with ticket priced at Rs 99 or Rs 149, aimed at fostering cinema-going as a weekly habit and enhancing accessibility for broader audiences.

Throughout the year, we remained focused on disciplined cost optimization. In Rent and CAM — our largest fixed cost — we achieved savings of INR 57 crore through stringent negotiations. On a comparable screen basis, total fixed costs rose by a modest 0.6% YoY, while fixed costs excluding Rent and CAM declined by 0.4% YoY. Notably, over a five-year horizon (FY’20– FY’25), our total fixed cost per screen has grown at a CAGR of just 0.8%, significantly below the economy-wide CPI inflation of 5.3%.

In line with our profitability and operational efficiency objectives, we continued to rationalize our screen portfolio, closing 72 screens and opening 77 new ones over the year. Our current screen portfolio stands at 1,743 screens across 352 cinemas in 111 cities in India and Sri Lanka.

As part of our ongoing transition to a Capital-Light Growth model, we recently opened two management-operated cinemas in Raipur (5 screens) and Jabalpur (4 screens). In addition, 23 cinemas with a combined 101 screens are signed under the Capital Light model and are expected to come up over the next 12–24 months. This strategic pivot is expected to materially reduce our new screen capex and drive long-term sustainable growth.

In a year marked by earnings volatility, the company strengthened its financial position by reducing net debt from INR 14,304 mn as of March 31, 2023, to INR 9,522 mn as of March 31, 2025 — a substantial reduction of INR 4,782 mn over the past 24 months (post-merger). This continued deleveraging reflects our disciplined approach to capital allocation, prudent cost controls, and a sharp focus on cash flow optimization — all of which position us well for future resilience and growth.

FY’26 promises to be a high-octane period for the exhibition industry, supported by a formidable lineup of content across Hollywood, Bollywood, and Regional cinema. A slew of eagerly awaited Hollywood tentpoles are set to hit the big screen, including Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Formula 1, Jurassic World Rebirth, Fantastic Four: The First Steps, Superman, Predator: Badlands, Tron: Ares, Ballerina, Now You See Me 3, The Conjuring: Last Rites, Karate Kid: Legends, Mortal Kombat 2, Tron: Ares, Avatar: Fire and Ash, among others. These global franchises are expected to generate significant traction among urban audiences, reaffirming cinemas as the preferred destination for immersive movie experiences.

Closer home, the Hindi film slate for the remaining fiscal is equally promising, headlined by commercial crowd-pullers such as Sitare Zameen Par, Housefull 5, War 2, Jolly LLB 3, The Delhi Files, Son of Sardar 2, Baaghi 4, Thama, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, Tere Ishk Mein, Aashique 3, Alpha, Border 2 and Love & War.

The regional cinema is also expected to see landmark releases that will resonate deeply with their core markets. Films such as Kingdom, Thug Life, Kuberaa, Kannappa, Coolie, Nikka Zaildar 4, Sardaarji 3, Idli Kadai and Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 reflect the growing scale and ambition of local-language productions. With strong fan bases, superstars, and culturally rich storylines, these titles are poised to drive robust performance across the regional markets.

Commenting on the results and performance, Mr. Ajay Bijli, Managing Director, PVR INOX Ltd., said, “FY’25 was an year of transformation — defined by our renewed focus on innovation and agility. We evolved from being reactive to becoming resilient and emerging as a more agile, future ready organization, laying the groundwork for long-term sustainability and relevance in a rapidly changing entertainment landscape.”

Maddock Films-backed Pooja Meri Jaan, Rumi Ki Sharafat, and Sarvagunn Sampanna face delays due to OTT valuation issues: Report

Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films has been one of the more consistent production banners in Bollywood, with a string of theatrical successes to its credit in recent times. After scoring hits with Munjya and Stree 2 in 2024, and the 2025 blockbuster Chhaava, the banner is currently gearing up for its next release, Bhool Chuk Maaf, while Cocktail 2 is set to go on floors soon. Additionally, Vicky Kaushal’s Mahavatar is currently in the scripting stage.

But even as the upcoming slate keeps expanding, three already completed films under Maddock Films — Pooja Meri Jaan, Rumi Ki Sharafat, and Sarvagunn Sampanna — remain unreleased, awaiting digital premieres. Despite being ready for over a year, the films have hit a roadblock due to disagreements over OTT acquisition deals.

According to a report by Mid-Day, the holdup lies in Vijan’s negotiations with streaming platforms, which have so far failed to meet his expectations. “All these mid-sized films have varied subjects with strong performances, falling in line with the banner’s vision of bringing diverse content,” the report quoted a source. “But after being ready for over a year, they are facing delays as Dinesh hasn’t been able to crack a deal with streamers that befits these projects. He believes the films deserve a certain figure, but the platforms feel they are too expensive.”

The content of the films is in line with Maddock’s brand of offbeat yet engaging storytelling. Pooja Meri Jaan, starring Huma Qureshi and Mrunal Thakur, addresses the sensitive issue of stalking. Rumi Ki Sharafat, led by Radhikka Madan, is a social comedy, while Sarvagunn Sampanna also falls within the space of mid-budget, content-driven cinema.

The report further quoted an insider saying, “If one looks at it from Dinesh’s point of view, he is right. Maddock Films is in a position to wait it out. After the pandemic, the acquisition budgets have reduced. But Dinesh doesn’t want to sell them at a price that doesn’t do justice to their potential.”

For now, Vijan seems content to wait for what he believes is a fair valuation.
