Vir Das to debut as author with memoir The Outsider

Comedian and actor-producer Vir Das is set to share his journey in his upcoming memoir, The Outsider. Known for his sharp wit and bold humor, Vir reflects on feeling like an outsider beyond just the comedy world. From being stranded on a beach in Mexico to navigating cultural identity and career ups and downs, the memoir explores his experiences of self-discovery, setbacks, and laughter.

Vir took to his social media to announce the book The Outsider – A Memoir for Misfits highlighting with a very deeply personal video showcasing the many chapters of his life, his identity, his career. The video announcement highlights his awkwardness, his global dominance, his lows as a comedian, his highs of being on world stage and to becoming the person he is today. In his words the book is guided from one idiot, fool, drifter, loser, dreamer and misfit to a world of such people.

In the book, amongst many incidents highlighted Vir recounts a memorable moment when, stranded on a pier in Cozumel, Mexico, with his cruise ship sailing away due to visa issues, he realized that being an outsider isn’t just something he experiences—it’s who he is. That moment, he says, perfectly encapsulates his life: “I was broke, hungover, dumped, jobless, and my trousers were full of sand. But, you know, when life gets absurd, the only way forward is to laugh.”

The Outsider is more than just a memoir—it’s a journey through the highs and lows of a life spent between cultures. Born in India, Vir Das moved frequently between India and Lagos, Nigeria, never fully fitting into one identity. He was the Indian kid in Africa and the African kid in India. His outsider experience continued as he performed in Illinois, worked in Chicago, and eventually made his mark in Bollywood and global stand-up. With a career that defies convention, Vir has broken barriers and built a name for himself from New York to Mumbai.

Being an outsider hasn’t been all bad for Vir Das—it’s shaped him into who he is today. His memoir celebrates resilience, humor, and the power of embracing the unconventional. He shares how failure and rejection played a role in his success, how being different became his strength, and how he learned to thrive in situations where others might walk away.

Vir’s message is simple: being an outsider isn’t a setback—it’s something to embrace. He has turned challenges into opportunities, building a successful international career while staying true to himself.

Reflecting on his globe-trotting life, Vir says: “I’ve had a strange life that took me across the world more than anyone I know. I don’t know how one ends up being the Indian kid in Nigeria, the African kid in boarding school, the boarding school kid in Delhi Public School, the Delhi kid in Galesburg, Illinois, the Chicago guy in Alabama, the America-return in Mumbai, the Bollywood guy in comedy, the stand-up comedy guy in Bollywood, the Bollywood guy in Indie Music, and the Indian in American comedy. All I know is, when you are blessed enough to step into all those worlds, you write a book about it. I hope to take you across the world through the eyes of a fortunate fool.”

Shiv Sena and MNS raise objections to the return of Fawad Khan to Indian cinema with Abir Gulaal

Fawad Khan returning to Bollywood with Abir Gulaal has drawn reactions from political parties in Maharashtra, particularly the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena. The upcoming film, also starring Vaani Kapoor, recently unveiled its trailer, bringing the Pakistani actor back to the Indian film industry after nearly a decade. The ban on Pakistani artists in Indian films has been in place since 2016. While the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition regarding the ban in 2023, tensions regarding their involvement in Bollywood remain.

Reacting to the trailer of Abir Gulaal, MNS leader Ameya Khopkar expressed the party’s opposition to the film’s release in Maharashtra. “We only learned about this film’s release today when the makers announced it. But we are making it clear that we will not allow this film to release in Maharashtra because it features a Pakistani actor. Under no circumstances will we permit such films to be released in the state. We are gathering more information about the film and will soon issue a full statement,” Khopkar told Dainik Bhaskar.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam (from Eknath Shinde faction) also addressed the issue, emphasizing the general sentiment towards Pakistani artists in India. Speaking to ETimes, he shared, “There is widespread hatred for Pakistan in India. When a film from Pakistan is released, Indian audiences do not prefer watching it. Even if a few people watch it out of curiosity, Pakistani artists have never been able to gain widespread success in India. If the central government has a policy on this, it should be implemented. The decision on whether Pakistani films should be released in India or if their artists should be allowed to work here must be made by the government.”

The controversy surrounding Fawad Khan’s return highlights the ongoing debate over cultural exchanges between India and Pakistan, with political parties and industry stakeholders holding differing views. Meanwhile, Abir Gulaal is a romantic drama that is scheduled hit cinemas on May 9, 2025. It remains to be seen whether if these objections will impact the release of the entertainer.

Fatima Sana Shaikh reveals her casting couch experience in the South; says, “Casting director kept asking if I would ‘do anything’ for the role”

Fatima Sana Shaikh has once again ignited a crucial conversation on the existence of casting couch in the film industry. In a clip from an older interaction, that has recently surfaced on social media, the Dangal actress candidly spoke about her experiences in the South Indian film industry, revealing how certain filmmakers and producers exploit aspiring actors under the guise of offering roles.

“There was some casting happening in the South and I sent my profile. After he received it, he asked, ‘If I was ready to do anything’ and I responded on message saying that ‘I will be working hard and whatever is required for the role’, I will do that. But he kept repeating the same thing – ‘You can do anything for your casting’—again and again. I was playing dumb. I was getting irritated but I also wanted to see how long he would continue. Eventually, he too got irritated and left it there,” she shared.

Fatima further revealed the harsh realities of navigating the industry, highlighting how many aspiring actors, especially women, are often placed in uncomfortable situations. “When I was in South, there were a lot of small-time producers. At that point of time, we would think, ‘You will get a chance in Bollywood after establishing yourself in the South industry.’ There used to be so many ways to approach this. We were in a room where the producers would openly state that you would get a chance there only when ‘you meet people’ and things like that. They would not address it (casting couch) directly but would speak in a vague manner, but they would ask you to ‘do things’ for a role.”

But you can’t help it, wherever there is power….”

As Fatima Sana Shaikh’s statements continue to gain traction, her courage in addressing the issue publicly has once again put a spotlight on the long-standing problem of exploitation in the film industry.

Sikandar: IMPPA condemns piracy, calls for stricter action against illegal streaming

The Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) has issued an official statement strongly condemning the piracy of Sikandar, the much-anticipated action thriller starring Salman Khan, Rashmika Mandanna, Sharman Joshi, and Kajal Aggarwal. The film, directed by AR Murugadoss, was leaked online in high-definition (HD) hours before its official theatrical release on March 30, 2025, causing significant financial losses to the industry.

IMMPA expressed deep concern over the recurring issue of film piracy, emphasizing that it continues to pose a serious threat to the entertainment sector, affecting producers, distributors, and theatre owners. The association highlighted that unauthorized online platforms, including Telegram and X, have facilitated the illegal distribution of films despite repeated warnings and legal actions. “IMPPA has consistently raised concerns about platforms like X and Telegram that facilitate the unauthorized streaming and distribution of films. Despite repeated efforts with the concerned authorities, these platforms continue to operate unchecked, boldly and fearlessly promoting on social media the free availability of these films on their platforms,” IMPPA stated, urging the authorities to take strict action.

Highlighting the broader implications, IMPPA stressed the importance of government intervention to curb piracy. “The unauthorized release of Sikandar is not just a financial setback; it is an attack on the creative efforts and dedication of the entire film community. We urge all stakeholders, including the Central and State Government, Police and cybercrime agencies, and digital platforms, to work together in strengthening legal frameworks and enforcing stricter anti-piracy measures to prevent such illegal activities in the future.”

The association also made a direct appeal to audiences, urging them to support the film industry by watching films through legitimate channels. “We also appeal to audiences to support the film industry by refraining from engaging in piracy. Only through collective action can we safeguard the future of Indian cinema and ensure that filmmakers continue to create and deliver quality content without the fear of unlawful exploitation.”

The leak of Sikandar follows a growing trend of Bollywood films falling prey to piracy despite strict legal frameworks. Notorious platforms like Tamilrockers, Movierulz, Filmyzilla, and various Telegram groups made the full movie available for illegal download and streaming shortly before its official release. Reports suggest that the leak likely originated from camcorder recordings inside theatres, which were then enhanced to HD quality and circulated online within hours.

EXCLUSIVE: COMPLETE list of 24 cuts imposed by CBFC in L2 Empuraan after controversy; 2002 reference removed; Baba Bajrangi’s name changed to Baldev

The much-awaited Malayalam film L2 Empuraan was released on Thursday, March 27 and took a huge opening. Sadly, the film got into a controversy due to its certain themes and plot points. The matter became so serious that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) insisted on several cuts to the film. This development shocked the industry as it was the CBFC which passed the film in the first place and didn’t find the said scenes objectionable then. Nevertheless, the makers decided to make these changes to douse the controversy.

Bollywood Hungama has accessed the complete cut list which the L2 Empuraan makers accepted on March 30. Contrary to reports, there are not 17 but 24 cuts which have been ordered by the CBFC. The card mentioning 2002 was replaced with ‘A few years ago’ and moreover the visuals of a man killing Mohsin were trimmed. At the same time, the visuals of a jeep driving through the road were deleted.

The visuals of a tractor passing in front of the religious structure were deleted in four places. An 11-second conversation between Masood and Zayed Masood was axed. The 4 seconds of Balraj (Abhimanyu Singh) at 20 minutes were asked to be deleted. At 4 places, the visuals of violence against women were removed, totalling 37 seconds.

At 2 more places the visuals of Balraj were deleted, each of 10 seconds. A visual of dead bodies, which was 8 seconds long, was censored. The name of the organization in a car was removed while the word ‘NIA’ was muted. A scene showing the TV news screen was replaced while the shot of a character, Peethambharan, was deleted. A conversation between Balraj and Munna (Sukant Goel) was reduced by 13 seconds.

Finally, at 15 places, the name Baba Bajrangi was replaced with Baldev.

In all, 128 seconds of the film were removed. Earlier, L2 Empuraan was 179.52 minutes long. The new run time is 177.44 minutes, that is, 2 hours 57 minutes and 44 seconds. The revised version is expected to hit cinemas from April 2, as per reports.

Earlier, when the film was passed on March 6, the CBFC had asked for 2 changes. They had deleted a six-second scene of sexual violence and a woman’s head being banged multiple times. In another scene, the dialogue in which the colours of the national flag were interpreted was replaced.
