EXCLUSIVE: Dia Mirza reasons why governments are not focusing on the environment and climate; says, “It would be damaging to politics of this country to focus on environment and climate”

Beauty queen turned actor, turned environment activist, Dia Mirza has been fighting for government and people to take cognisance of environmental and climactic changes for a while now. In fact, Dia has been very vociferous in drawing attention to issues that have cropped up due to negligence of the environment. Well, recently in an exclusive Bollywood Hungama interview, Dia opened up on why she thinks governments and people at large are least interested in the environment and climate.

During the conversation, when asked why people prefer to talk about redundant issues rather than focus on the environment and climate, Dia responded saying, “It shocks me every day that people are least concerned about the environment; especially because the climate is not a part of mainstream media. It isn’t featured as prominently as it needs to. I do not know how many times Delhi has been ranked as the most polluted city. That is the capital of our country, and it is the world’s most polluted city, which means living in that city and breathing that air is toxic, harmful and life threatening. Not enough attention is paid to such things, not enough is spoken about it.”

Continuing further, while talking about why the environment and climate never become prominent issues, Dia remembered a conversation she had with another environmental activist. Narrating her conversation, and what struck her the most, she continued, “I was speaking to an 18 year old environmental activist, who said something to me and I can’t help but agree with him. He said, ‘Until climate and environment don’t become part of vote bank politics, it will not become anyone’s centre of focus.’ And that is true! We are so caught up with discussing things that are irrelevant. It would be damaging to politics of this country to focus on environment and climate, because that will not really fill their pockets or get them their votes. So it is really on us, to make climate and environment an integral part of what qualifies for my vote.”

Back on the work front, Dia Mirza who recently became a mother had been on sabbatical from the world of films. Currently focussing on enjoying her role as a mother and doting on her son, Dia seems to be in no hurry to return to the big screen.
