The Mumbai Sessions Court has ordered the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) police to investigate a cheating complaint filed against Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and her husband, businessman Raj Kundra, by bullion trader Prithviraj Saremal Kothari.

Details of Shilpa-Raj’s cheating case
Kothari alleges that Shetty and Kundra, through their company Satyug Gold Private Limited, launched an investment scheme in 2014. Investors were promised a specific quantity of gold at a discounted rate upfront, with guaranteed delivery on the maturity date regardless of market fluctuations.

Kothari claims he invested Rs 90 lakhs for 5,000 grams of 24-carat gold, to be delivered on April 2, 2019. However, upon maturity, he reportedly received neither the gold nor the promised value. Instead, he alleges he was offered a postdated cheque for just the principal amount Rs 90 lakhs.
Court finds grounds for investigation in Shilpa-Raj’s cheating case
Judge NP Mehta of the Mumbai Sessions Court found a “prima facie cognizable offence” based on Kothari’s complaint. This means there is enough initial evidence to warrant a police investigation. The court has directed the BKC police to investigate the allegations and determine if any criminal offense under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) or the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors Act (MPID Act) was committed.
Police to Investigate and determine next steps in Shilpa-Raj’s cheating case
The BKC police will now conduct their investigation into the allegations. If evidence supports Kothari’s claims, they could register an FIR (First Information Report) against Shilpa Shetty, Raj Kundra, and any other potentially responsible individuals.

Neither Shilpa nor Raj were represented in court

This development comes amidst ongoing legal troubles for Raj Kundra, who was arrested in 2021 on pornography charges. It is important to note that these are just allegations, and neither Shetty nor Kundra have been convicted of any crime.
