While last evening marked a special moment for many National Film Award winners, many of the other celebrities who were a part of the prestigious Indian Film Festival of Melbourne aka IFFM 2024 in Australia too were felicitated. Kartik Aaryan and Ram Charan were among the actors who received special honors and joining them is also popular filmmaker Kabir Khan. After Kartik bagged an acting award for his performance in the recently released Chandu Champion, it was filmmaker Khan who got felicitated for his work in the biopic.

Kabir Khan bagged the Best Director award at the ongoing IFFM in Australia for Chandu Champion and the official social media handle of the festival shared this news on social media.

Meanwhile, producer Sajid Nadiadwala expressed his happiness over the film winning accolades at the festival and shared about it on the social media platform X, aka Twitter, saying, “Champion winning hearts at the @IFFMelb ! ?????? For the unversed, Chandu Champion is inspired by true events and is loosely based on the life story of India’s first Paralympics gold medallist Murlikant Petkar. Shot across multiple locations, Chandu Champion features an ensemble cast of Vijay Raaz, Bhuvan Arora, Yashpal Sharma, Rajpal Yadav, Aniruddh Dave, Shreyas Talpade, Nitin Bhajan, Hemangi Kavi, among others. The film traces the journey of a stubborn village boy who dreams of winning the Arjuna Award but ends up being awarded Padma Shree and traces his experiences as an aspiring athlete, his tenure in the military and his participation in Paralympics.

The Kolkata rape case has left many outraged with several celebrities raising their voices against women-related crimes and urging the government to impose stronger protocols and stringent punishments. Joining them is Celina Jaitly, former actress and UN human rights activist, who has taken to social media to pen a long note about victim blaming. The actress, who has showcased her support towards several causes including actively participating in helping the LGBTQA+ community, decided to share her own experiences and made some shocking revelations.

In a lengthy note, the former actress and mother shared detailed encounters of two instances where men cat-called her and even attempted to hurt her and how in these instances, she was told to careful because she was ‘progressive’ in her approach and was taught that ‘Women are at fault’. Sharing a photo from her childhood days, Celina wrote, “THE VICTIM IS ALWAYS AT FAULT : In this pic I was in 6th grade only when boys from a nearby university started to wait outside my school.They would follow the school rickshaw making catcalls all the way home everyday. I pretended not to notice them and few days later because of that they started throwing stones at me in the middle of the road to get my attention. Not one bystander batted an eye. I was told by a teacher : It was because I was “too westernised and did not wear loose clothes and did not tie my hair in two braids with oil it was my fault !” It was also at this age when a man first flashed his private parts to me while waiting for the school rickshaw in the morning. For many years I blamed myself for this incident which I kept to myself running the words of the teacher again and again in my mind that it was MY FAULT!”

She continued, “In 11th grade I still remember they cut the wire of my scooty’s brakes because I was not acknowledging the university boys who heckled and called me rude names & left lewd notes on my scooty. My male class mates got scared for me and told our teachers. My class teacher called me and told me “You come across as a FORWARD type of girl, riding a scooty and wearing jeans to extra classes with short open hair that’s why boys think you are of a loose character” It was always my fault. I still remember that day jumping off my scooty to save myself because of my brake wires being cut off. I was hurt badly and yet it was my fault. My Scooty was damaged… I was both physically and psychologically hurt… And I was told it was MY FAULT!”

Further, the actress also mentioned how even her grandfather – a Retired Colonel had to face repercussions of this. “My retired Colonel Grandfather who fought two wars for our country in his old age had to take to escorting me back n forth to school… I still remember those rude boys who chased me even damaging my scooty they also passed derogatory remarks on my retired colonel grandfather making fun of him. Nana stood and stared at them and then he turned away shook his head and I could read his face as he walked away with me. His disgust at the very people he laid his life on line for. It’s time to stand up and ask for our right to be protected WE ARE NOT AT FAULT !”

Last week, India woke up another spine-chilling case of rape and murder of a young medical trainee in Kolkata that has sparked a nationwide outrage with doctors going on strike. Since the incident happened around August 15, many celebrities questioned the freedom and safety of women as the country celebrated another year of independence. Among them is Tamannaah Bhatia who has pointed out that such occasions are ‘incomplete’ without appropriate measures being taken to safeguard women.

Tamanaah Bhatia urges women to strive for ‘real Independence’

Joining the list of celebrities who have shared heart wrenching notes comparing the incident to several other heinous crimes against women that have been reported in the past is Tamannaah Bhatia. The actress shared a note on Friday wherein she said, “Yesterday, India completed 78 years of Independence. We commemorated bravery and sacrifice of our freedom fighters. However at the same time we were reminded yet again, that our independence is incomplete without the freedom and safety of our women. The heinous crime committed in Kolkata last week, and countless others that continue to happen every day, are constant reminders of how women continue to face violence, harassment & discrimination, our voices silenced and our rights denied.”

She continued, “We are past the time of realisations, we have to go beyond conversations, discussions and bring actionable change. Tomorrow is too late, JUSTICE needs to be served. It’s high time that we look for the right solutions and ensure that we are teaching our children, especially the boys, the true value of a woman. Every woman’s heart is bleeding, let’s strive for real independence.”

In a significant development, Bollywood actress and co-owner of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Punjab Kings, Preity Zinta, has approached the Chandigarh High Court to prevent the co-owner of the team and businessman Mohit Burman from selling a portion of his shares to a third party. According to reports, Zinta has petitioned the court to stop Burman from disposing off his 11.5% stake in the company, citing a breach of her pre-emption rights under the company’s agreement. The court has issued notices to the respondents, including Burman, and has listed the case for hearing on August 20, 2024.

According to the news report in Tribune, it was stated that, “Preity Zinta said Burman holds approximately 48 per cent of the shareholding and is also on the board of directors. She has filed the petition under Section 9 of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act-1996 seeking interim measures and direction in view of the disputes and differences between her and respondent Mohit Burman.”

Zinta, who owns 23% of the franchise, has alleged that Burman has threatened to sell his stake to a third party, prompting her to seek urgent interim protection. The development comes amid reports of a rift between Zinta and Burman, with the actress claiming that Burman has acted in bad faith and disregarded her rights as a co-owner. The Punjab Kings management has not officially commented on the issue. Meanwhile, Burman addressed the matter to Cricbuzz, confirming in their reports, “I don’t have any plans to sell my shares.”

While the case highlights the internal power struggles within the franchise, the court’s decision is eagerly awaited, as it may have significant implications for the ownership structure and management of the Punjab Kings. For the unversed, apart from her and Mohit Burman, the actress’ former fiancé Ness Wadia too is the co-owner of the IPL team.

Pinkvilla exclusively reported earlier this week that Ajay Devgn and his team had assembled a large star-studded cast for the comedy caper Son of Sardaar 2, which has begun production in London. We informed our readers that Ravi Kishan, Mrunal Thakur, Vijay Raaz, Chunkey Pandey, Vindu Dara Singh, Deepak Dobriyal, Mukul Dev, Ashwini Kalsekar, Kubbra Sait, and Sanjay Dutt will play key roles in the film. And now, in a startling turn of events, we have exclusively learned from the sets that the producers have decided to take a drastic step by pulling Vijay Raaz from the movie.

According to insiders close to the project, Vijay Raaz has allegedly been harsh with the producers and crew of Son of Sardaar 2 on the set. We asked Kumar Mangat Pathak, who co-produced Son of Sardaar 2 with Ajay Devgn, for a reaction. The filmmaker said, “Yes, it’s true that we have removed Vijay Raaz from the film because of his behaviour on the sets. He demanded for bigger rooms, vanity van and also overcharged us for the spot boys. In-fact, his spot boy was paid Rs.20,000 per night which is more than any big actor. UK is an expensive place, and everyone got standard rooms during the shoot, but he demanded premium suites. When we tried explaining the costing scenario to him, he refused to understand, and spoke rudely. His constant response was, ‘Aap Logo Ne Mujhe Approach Kiya, Main Kaunsa Saamne Se Aya Kaam Mangne’. While we tried to accommodate all his demands, the behaviour kept getting worse, as his demands never ended. He started to demand two cars for a 3 person staff to travel for as well. How can we do that? When the EP said no, he was rude with the EP (Executive Producer). After all the discussions, we decided to remove him from the film.”

Vijay Raaz had a different story to tell. He told Pinkvilla, “I reached the location before time for trial. I reached the van, and Ravi Kishan came to meet me. The EP, Ashish, and the producer Kumar Mangat came to meet me, followed by director Vijay Arora. I stepped out of the van, and spotted Ajay Devgn standing around 25 metres away. I didn’t go to greet him as he was busy, and I continued to speak to my friends around. 25 minutes later, Mr. Kumar Mangat came to me 0061nd said, ‘Aap Film Se Nikal Jaaye, Hum Aapko Nikal Rahe Hai’. The only misconduct from my end is, I didn’t greet Mr. Ajay Devgn. I didn’t even meet the crew, and these are the only people I interacted with. I was removed from the film 30 minutes of reaching the sets, as I didn’t greet Ajay Devgn. These are powerful people, and the chatter of misconduct doesn’t arise at all.”

According to Kumar Mangat Pathak, the problems began in Mumbai when Vijay Raaz signed on for the project. Mangat said, “Ajay Devgn isn’t someone who is waiting to be greeted by people. He always likes to be surrounded by creative people and treats everyone with respect. The story of him being removed for not greeting Ajay Devgn is false. We suffered a loss of at-least two crore for removing Vijay Raaz from the film and we would not take such a step for small matters. His behaviour was a major area of concern and there is no place for disrespect on the sets of our film, as we work like a family. He constantly told all our EP’s and even me that he isn’t in need of doing Son of Sardaar 2, and he is doing it only because we approached him.  He kept demanding bigger room, despite knowing that the rooms cost a bomb in UK. He refused to co-operate. The attitude is a problem and even we didn’t want to associate with a person having such mentality.”

The winners of the 70th National Film Awards were announced today and Sooraj Barjatya won the Best Director award for his much loved film Uunchai (2022). The filmmaker, who has an insane fan following for his family dramas, spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungamaabout the National Award win.

Sooraj Barjatya began by saying, “When I started with Uunchai, I was often told that it isn’t my kind of film to make. It didn’t have lavish sets, big song and dance numbers or celebratory outfits. But Uunchai came from my heart. As a director, I didn’t pick the story.Uunchai’s story picked me! And today, I thank that story for choosing me. Uunchaigave me my first National Award for Best Director. It’s a beautiful journey that me and my film have had that comes to a perfect landing today!”

When asked how he felt on winning the National Award, Sooraj Barjatya said, “I am humbled to be honoured amongst the best that the country has seen in cinema during 2022. It takes me back 30 years, when Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994) won the National Award for Best Film. The rush and happiness that I felt as a young director then was crazy! But today, as I get the National Award for Best Director for Uunchai, there is a sense of gratitude and calmness. The joy and happiness are much more internal today. As a director, my job for the last 35 years has been to keep telling stories. And I’m not done yet, there’s much more to come!”

What does the National Award mean to him? Sooraj Barjatya smiled and replied, “Our National Film Awards unite our industry because they are a celebration of films made in every language. Winning the Best Director, at this stage, makes me feel humbled and honoured to the core. I feel I have truly climbed my Everest today. This immense recognition belongs to my entire team of senior actors and technicians, who fought the pandemic and shot at unheard locations with me.”

When asked whom he would like to dedicate the award to, the filmmaker said, “Uunchaiwas a special film made in the 75th year of our production house. I would like to dedicate this award to Rajshri Productions and to all my elders in the family, under whom we continue to learn, to tell stories which can be inspiring, happy, and which help us trust each other and the power of goodness.”

Uunchai starred Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani, Anupam Kher, Danny Denzongpa, Neena Gupta, Sarika and Parineeti Chopra. It is the story of three friends who, despite their old age, trek to the Everest Base Camp for the sake of their deceased friend. It was produced by Rajshri Productions (P) Ltd. along with Mahaveer Jain Films and Boundless Media. Neena Gupta also won the National Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

The horrible incidence of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a medical college in Kolkata has shocked and saddened the nation. In response to the tragedy, Bollywood actresses Priyanka Chopra, Hrithik Roshan, Genelia Deshmukh, and Ankit Tiwari, among others, expressed their outrage and concern on social media.

On his X account, Hrithik wrote, “Yes we need to evolve into a society where we ALL feel equally safe. But that is going to take decades. It’s going to hopefully happen with sensitizing and empowering our sons and daughters. The next generations will be better.”

Ankit Tiwari demand justice for women on Independence Day on X account and wrote, “We will be able to truly celebrate Independence Day only when there is justice for physical harassment, intimidation and violence against women.”

Sources confirm makers of Border 2 have signed Varun Dhawan to join Sunny Deol in Bhushan Kumar and JP Dutta’s highly anticipated film. Dhawan will be taking on a significant role alongside Deol. With this powerful casting, the film will raise anticipation to new heights.

Sources suggest, “The makers have roped in Varun for a major role in the film. This film could mark a major milestone in his career, as Border 2 holds a special place with the audience. This addition is certainly elevating the film’s appeal.”

Readers may recall that a lot of names are being speculated for the remainder of the cast of Border 2. A week ago, Binnoy K Gandhi, in a chat with Bollywood Hungama, commented on these reports. He revealed, “The star cast will be announced soon. Within a month, we are going to organize a big event where we are going to showcase the entire star cast with their characters and their getups.”

Having said that, it is worth mentioning here that a few days back, Bollywood Hungama reported that the makers of the upcoming Sunny Deol starrer have roped in screenwriter Sumit Arora to pen the screenplay and dialogues of the much-awaited war drama. For the unversed, Sumit Arora has previously written projects like Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan (2023), Kartik Aaryan starrer Chandu Champion (2024) and Manoj Bajpayee headlined The Family Man.
