What is the Kolkata rape and murder case?

A medical trainee was allegedly raped and murdered in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. While the Kolkata police took over the investigation after the body was found lying in the hall the next morning, their investigation has not progressed satisfactorily. It has now led to the CBI taking over the case. Meanwhile, doctors in Kolkata have questioned their safety and have taken to the streets to protest against the lackadaisical attitude of the college authorities. In the recent development, the doctors have announced a 24-hour strike as a part of this protest.

A Mumbai court has discharged Australian national Paul Bartels from a drug case linked to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The decision comes as a significant development in the ongoing investigations surrounding the high-profile case.

Insufficient Evidence Leads to Acquittal
As per a report by PTI, Bartels, a friend of Agisilaos Demetriades, was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in November 2020 as part of its probe into alleged drug use within Bollywood. However, after a thorough examination of the case, Special Judge Mahesh Jadhav found insufficient evidence to link Bartels to the drug-related offenses.

The court’s order, released recently, highlighted the fact that the primary basis for Bartels’ arrest was the statements of co-accused individuals, which are not considered admissible evidence unless corroborated by independent material. Since no such evidence was presented, the court concluded that there were no grounds to proceed with the case against Bartels.
Ongoing Investigations
It is important to note that this development does not impact the overall investigation into the death of Sushant Singh Rajput. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues to probe the circumstances surrounding the actor’s demise, which was initially reported as suicide.

The drug angle of the case, which gained significant media attention, has seen several arrests and developments. For the unversed, SSR was found hanging in his apartment in Bandra on June 14, 2020. The CBI is probing the case of his alleged suicide.

Mrunal Thakur shared a series of post on her Instagram stories, on her first post she wrote, “Her dad found her naked, lying motionless on the floor with a broken pelvic girdle, disfigured limbs and shattered pieces of glasses in her eyes, bleeding incessantly. Her plight in those final minutes is unimaginable. Her parents were denied any contact with her dead body for 3 hours after they reached the crime scene. 150 gm of semen was found in her body, one man can only have 15 gm. A scapegoat is in custody. Dean said she was psychotic. After the transfer to CBI, renovation work started in the hospital. At this point it’s not just a doctor issue anymore, it’s just inhumane. We keep unlocking lower levels of inhumanity year after year. Fools were those, who even hoped there would be reforms after the Nirbhaya case. It’s been 12 years. Nothing has changed. Saw some Instagram stories saying that it’s a crime to be a doctor in this country.”

On August 9, a female post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor’s body was discovered in a lecture hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. On Saturday, a community volunteer was arrested in connection with the event.

On Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation into the trainee doctor’s alleged rape and murder from the Kolkata Police.

In the last 10 days, the 1993 film Tirangaa has come into the spotlight after there were reports that Akshay Kumar would be seen in its remake. As per reports, Narendra Hirawat of NH Studioz, who has the rights to Tirangaa, has signed the actor for the remake. The report further stated that the producer won’t be able to name the film Tirangaa as the rights to the title rests with the 1993 film’s producer-director, Mehul Kumar. Narendra Hirawat clarified on this news. And now, Bollywood Hungama has learned that Mehul Kumar is set to make a comeback with a film named Tirangaa. And it’ll feature the original film’s lead actor, Nana Patekar.

A source told Bollywood Hungama, “An official announcement of Tirangaa will be made today, that is, August 15. This is the day when India will celebrate its 77th Independence Day and it’s an apt occasion to announce such a patriotic film.”

Tirangaa will be the fourth collaboration between Mehul Kumar and Nana Patekar. Their previous projects include much-loved films like Tirangaa (1993), Krantiveer (1994) and Kohram (1999).

Tirangaa, which was released on January 29, 1993, also starred Raaj Kumar and remains a beloved classic on television and digital. Since it arrived on satellite, it has been a regular on TV channels every Independence Day and Republic Day.

Coming back to the new Tirangaa, the details about the cast and crew will be announced soon.

While giving clarification, Narendra Hirawat told Times Now that contrary to reports, he has the title rights to Tirangaa as well. He further said that it was his lead actor Akshay Kumar who wanted the film’s title to be Tirangaa.

Mehul Kumar, meanwhile, maintained that it was he who had the title rights. He told Bollywood Hungama, “Mr Narendra Hirawat did approach me for the title. I told him that certain landmark films are best not remade. Today, if you remake Tirangaa, people are immediately going to draw comparisons with Nana Patekar and Raaj Kumar. And if the performances are not up to the mark, then people won’t be impressed.”

In an interview with Times Now, he said, “Hirawat does not have the title Tirangaa as he says. The title is with me and I have registered three titles having the word Tirangaa- Tirangaa, Tirangaa 2 and Mission Tirangaa. I am already in talks with Nana for Mission Tirangaa. So, Hirawat will need a NOC from me if, at all, he goes with that title.” This statement was given by him earlier this week after he decided to name his new venture as Tirangaa instead of Mission Tirangaa.
