Chhapaak saw collections primarily from key multiplexes as it collected Rs. 28 crores* in its first week at the box office. Though the film took an as expected start on Friday with Rs. 4.77 crores coming in, the momentum that it needed to gain from thereon wasn’t really there. The film did benefit from partial holidays right through Monday to Wednesday. However, on Thursday, it went low again and as a result the collections after the first week are overall ordinary.

Ideally, the first week collections should have come from the first weekend itself as that would have indicated acceptance from a larger segment of audiences. However, for now, it is only elite which seems to have stepped in for the film with a majority of audiences choosing a far more commercial Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior.

Deepika Padukone has seen critical appreciation for her part in Chhapaak and next up she would be seen in a far more mainstream film ’83 with Ranveer Singh. Promotion of the Kabir Khan directed film has already begun and that should see her get back in action in a far bigger way.

Akshay Kumar has fast become one of the most bankable actors of recent times. With each of his films managing to rake in the moolah, Akshay, who features in multiple releases each year, is riding high. In fact, in 2019 Kumar featured in four releases viz. Kesari, Mission Mangal, Housefull 4 and Good Newwz. Looking at the box office, each of these releases went on to become hits crossing the Rs. 150 cr mark at the box office. If that wasn’t enough, looking at the worldwide collections of Akshay Kumar’s releases in 2019 the detail that stands out is that the actor has managed to rake in over Rs. 1000 cr. in gross collections from these four releases.

When compared to other actors for the year 2019, Akshay Kumar surpasses Hrithik Roshan, who comes in second with over Rs. 600 cr. gross from two, releases viz. War and Super 30.

Interestingly, while Akshay Kumar has managed to set a new box office record in 2019, the actor has an equal number of releases in 2020 as well. With Sooryavanshi, Laxmmi Bomb, Prithviraj and Bachchan Pandey slated to hit screens this year, expectation are that the actor might just surpass his own record.

Partial holidays during the week are helping Chhapaak to some extent. Though the collections are on the lower side, they are at least stable, especially at the properties where the target audiences frequent. The numbers continue to be over the Rs. 2 crores mark and this was evidenced on Wednesday as well when Rs. 2.25 crores* came in. On Tuesday, the collections were Rs. 2.55 crores (which were better than Monday numbers of Rs. 2.35 crores) so in a way there is some sort of hold at least.

So far, the Deepika Padukone starrer has Rs. 26.17 crores and it should be closer to the Rs. 30 crores mark before the week is through. Though in the coming week there is no real competition from any new release, Chhapaak would be impacted by the euphoria that Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior is generating across mass as well as class centers.

Back in 2015, director Meghna Gulzar had released her Irrfan Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma starrer Talvar. That film had collected 31 crores in its lifetime to emerge as a good success. Now Chhapaak would manage to go past that number in its lifetime but won’t be anywhere comparable to the blockbuster success that Alia Bhatt starrer Raazi had enjoyed.

What a superb feat it has turned out to be for Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior. The film has entered the Rs. 100 Crore Club in mere 6 days and that too in style. Collections of the film are just not slowing down, as evidenced on Wednesday as well when Rs. 15 crores* more came in. The film has found wide spread appreciation from the audiences and the manner in which it is doing currently, looks like it is there for a long run now.

The film has now collected Rs. 105.96 crores* and that’s a superb number by all means. For Ajay Devgn, this is a big century indeed. This can well be evidenced from the fact that the film has gone past the lifetime numbers of De De Pyaar De [Rs.103.50 crores] and Raid [Rs.103.07] in real quick time. Next target is Total Dhamaal [Rs.154.23] and that number too would be surpassed inside the second week itself.

For Saif Ali Khan, the film’s success is a major shot in the arm as it has crossed the lifetime numbers of his last hit Race 2 [Rs. 100.45 crores] in a jiffy. Of late, the actor had suffered many disappointments despite being good in majority of films and hence his villainous act in Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior becomes all the more notable.

As for Om Raut, he is now the newest amongst the breed of directors who score a century in their debut outing itself. Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior is the debut directorial affair for Om Raut and he has scored quite well in his maiden effort. With one more day yet to go before the first week is through, Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior has set itself up well for a very healthy lifetime score.

This Friday sees the release of family entertainer Jai Mummy Di. The film features Sunny Singh and Sonnalli Seygall in the lead roles and they are coming back for this Luv Ranjan production after delivering a superhit in Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2. This time around the point of conflict is the respective mother of the two youngsters, enacted by Supriya Pathak and Poonam Dhillon.

The film has been ready for a while now. At one point in time it as supposed to release last summer, but now it is arriving as one of the first releases of 2020. The promo of this Navjot Gulati directed film does lend an impression of a breezy entertainer in the offering. The film comprises of at least a couple of songs which can be potential chartbusters. However, the promotion and marketing of the film is decent, not excellent, which means eventually it would all boil down to the word of mouth from the audiences.

Jai Mummy Di is coming at the time when Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior is roaring the loudest and is bound to see added footfalls in the second week as well. Though there isn’t any other competition for the film, Jai Mummy Di would need to be really strong in content in order to see a turnaround over the weekend. As of now, the first day could well be in Rs. 1-2 crores range and post that it would all be about how the youth followed by the family audiences embrace the film.
