After bringing in Rs. 2.07 crores on Friday, Good Newwz showed growth of around 50% on Saturday to collect Rs. 3.06 crores at the box office. This is on the expected lines as in multiplexes the film was bound to growth. That said, while on relative terms this looks good, as an absolute number one did expect the film to show higher growth and come close to the Rs. 3.50 crores mark.

The film could have seen added footfalls if not for major reduction in screens due to arrival of three big films – Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior, Chhapaak and Darbar. Moreover, especially the first film in the list is doing quite well and that has resulted in audience attention been diverted.

Still, the job is more than done for the biggie as it has already collected Rs. 186.49 crores so far. The film would comfortably go past the Rs. 190 crores mark today and then its journey towards the blockbuster tag will begin during the weekdays.

After an ordinary start at the box-office, Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak has seen an upward trend in the business on its second day as early estimates suggest collection in the range of Rs. 6.25 to 6.75 crore taking the two day total to Rs. 11 to 11.50 crore. Being a film appealing primarily to the high end multiplexes, the growth should have been more as in the past we have seen multiplex oriented cinema double up their collections on Saturday.

While a section will blame the below par performance of Chhapaak on Deepika’s visit to JNU to take a political stand, the fact lies that the content hasn’t been appreciated much and the competition from a strong opponent, Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior, has taken away a section of audience that might have seen Chhapaak, had it arrived solo. The collections are best in Delhi-NCR, Bangalore and Kolkata however it’s dull at other places across the country. A film like Chhapaak would have got ample of support from Mumbai City but it has been completely overpowered by the wave of Ajay Devgn’s period saga.

There will be limited growth in collections on Sunday and the film is looking to close its weekend a little under the Rs. 20 crore mark, which isn’t really an impressive result.  We don’t even rule out the possibility of a flat trend on Sunday. The second day collections should ideally have been the opening day for the film as that would have set a platform for growth over the weekend.  The target for Chhapaak was weekend around the Rs. 30 crore mark, however it has fallen short of the target by Rs. 10 crore. With reports being highly mixed and a limited growth on Saturday, the future trend from Monday for this Deepika Padukone film looks hazy.

After opening better than the general expectations, Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior has recorded a big jump in the biz on Saturday as early estimates suggest collections in the range of Rs. 22.50 cr. to 24.50 cr. taking two day collections to Rs. 37 to 39 crore. The business has escalated across the country with the Maharashtra belt (Mumbai and Pune) getting near record occupancy with houseful boards all across the state. The film ran at near optimum capacity in Maharashtra and the reports are coming in that additional shows have been added at national multiplex chains replacing its competitor Chhapaak as the period saga did face limited capacity issue at some centers.

While Ajay’s popularity in Maharashtra backed with local flavour is working wonders for the film in Maharashtra, even the territories like Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata and Patna have nearly double the occupancy today. The jump at national multiplex chains (PVR, INOX, Cinepolis and Carnival) is around 60 – 65%, and for a film like Tanhaji, which is not completely multiplex oriented, to witness this sort of growth on Saturday is a stamp of acceptance by the audience. It is always tricky to make a period film on a regional hero, however the word of mouth of Tanhaji is on the positive side which is getting audience on board across the country.

The collections will grow further on Sunday, with mass belts too coming in the action and the opening weekend is expected to close in the Rs. 65 crore range, which is a huge number for a non-holiday weekend. A factor which is working wonders for Tanhaji is the fact that the makers didn’t hike the ticket rates as they went ahead with the normal ticket slabs all across, which has grabbed more footfalls. Though the weekend collections of Tanhaji might fall a little short of the Christmas and New Year release – Dabangg 3 and Good Newwz respectively, the footfalls will be much higher due to the controlled ticketing strategy. The warrior has roared, and seems that here to rule the box-office!

After collecting fabulously for two weeks at the box office, Good Newwz had its first drop on the third Friday. The film brought in Rs. 2.07 crores more which is close to 50% drop from Friday numbers of Rs. 4.05 crores.

The film was challenged by Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior which opened quite well and also Chhapaak which saw good opening at premium multiplexes. As a result, the footfalls were impacted for the Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani starrer which was otherwise enjoying a free and uninterrupted run so far.

Nonetheless, the Raj Mehta directed film is the kind which should see a good jump all over again over the weekend, and particularly today as urban audiences will come out in big numbers. While at least Rs. 3 crores more will certainly come in, it won’t be surprising if the collections are in the vicinity of Rs. 3.50 crores too.

The film has so far collected Rs. 183.43 crores and the first major target for it would be to go past the Rs. 190 crores mark before the third weekend is through.

It was predicted in this column that Chhapaak will take an opening in the range of Rs. 5-7 crores. This is what happened as Rs. 5 crores* came on the first day. Though this is on the lower side of the range, the numbers are still there for the film which belongs to a genre which doesn’t offer conventional entertainment. The film was meant to find audiences primarily at major multiplexes at the urban centers and this is what happened as well.

The film has found critical appreciation, which is on expected lines. As for audience word of mouth, it is decent to good as well. It may not be phenomenal from all quarters but then no one has complained about the content either. All of this means that the film could well see growth over rest of the weekend.

For Deepika Padukone, the project was always a risk since she was coming two years after the blockbuster success of Padmaavat. However she trusted Meghna Gulzar’s vision and not just stepped in as an actress but also a producer. Moreover, Fox Star Studios came on board as well to ensure that the film gets a well directed and targeted release. Now it’s all about the kind of numbers that are accumulated over the weekend that would set the target for the eventual lifetime for the film.

2020 has started off on a good note. Ajay Devgn starrer Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior has exceeded expectations by scoring far better than what it was expected to on the first day. While it was predicted that around Rs. 10-12 crores would come on Friday, the collections went far ahead of that as Rs. 17 crores* came in. This is quite good, especially considering the fact that there was competition around at least at multiplexes with new release Chhapaak as well as Good Newwz which is still spreading good news at the box office.

The film is leading by a distance now and is only going to jump further today and tomorrow since the critical acclaim is there from all quarters and audience word of mouth is very positive as well. The cinematic appeal of the Om Raut directed film has been hailed as a unique experience for the audiences and this is what is set to pull them into theatres.

Ajay Devgn has made films across genres over the last three decades and with this historical he has excelled as a producer as well. Moreover, Saif Ali Khan has come with a mean act which is being loved too, something that will aid further in bringing on footfalls. The start is there for the film and good jumps from here will ensure that a hit is on the cards.
