Tisca Chopra recalls being REPLACED by “someone younger” four days before shoot: “It’s a very sad world we’re living in” 

Acclaimed actress Tisca Chopra recently spoke out about facing ageism in the film industry. In a candid interview with Galatta Plus, Chopra revealed a disheartening experience where she was replaced by “someone younger” just days before a film shoot.

The Taare Zameen Par actress recalled, “In 2016, there was a particular director who strung me along for a bit of time. We started doing prep, costumes, lines, and everything. About four days before the shoot, he said they were going with someone younger. Then, he tried to fob it off by saying it’s the call of the producers. But I could see that it was just… I didn’t want to hear that anymore.”

The actress further expressed her disappointment with the film industry’s focus on youth over experience. She elaborated, “By that time, I also got a sense of the fact that there were things going on in my head that I had been ignoring for some time. I’ve had the benefit of working with wonderful directors and learning from them by watching their process and imbibing that.” She added, “If youth and beauty are the only two things that are attractive in a particular market… my insides rebelled against that. If they are interested only in the young and beautiful, it’s a very sad world we’re living in.”
Tisca Chopra turns frustration into creation
This experience, however, also ignited a creative fire in Chopra.  She decided to take control of her narrative and explore filmmaking. She revealed, “I had been doing this piece called Chutney at Prithvi Theatre, Mumbai. It was based on Bhisham Sahni’s story. It too had morphed into something else by that time in my head. So, I narrated that to a few, very close people and we came up with the story and wrote it. The protagonist was neither good-looking nor young. Nor did she have any other privileges. She was not well-spoken and didn’t have a male heir or a child. And yet, she controls the narrative in that story.”

Speaking of the professional front, Tisca was last seen in Netflix’s original film Murder Mubarak, directed by Homi Adajania.

“Zameen aasman ka fark hai”: Meena Kumari’s stepson strongly REACTS to Sharmin Segal calling Pakeezah actress’ “nothingness” her inspiration for Heeramandi 

Legendary actress Meena Kumari’s legacy continues to spark conversation. Sharmin Segal, star of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s series Heeramandi, drew criticism for her performance despite the show’s overall success. In a previous interview, Sharmin cited Meena Kumari’s portrayal of “nothingness” in the classic film Pakeezah as an inspiration for her character in Heeramandi. However, Meena Kumari’s stepson, Tajdar Amrohi, has expressed strong disagreement with this comparison.

Speaking to Zoom TV, Amrohi asserted, “Zameen aasman ka fark hai between ‘Heeramandi’ and Pakeezah (There is a difference of earth and sky between them). Don’t compare the two. Nobody can make Pakeezah again. Neither Meena Kumari nor Kamal Amrohi can ever be born again.”

He further added, “I don’t want to say much about this since Bhansali is a big fan of my father Kamal Amrohi. In every film of his, Bhansali tries to take shots in a very similar way as my father did. Once, he had come to Kamalistan Studio, he asked where my Dad used to sit, where my Dad walked. Out of great respect, he touched the ground where my Dad sat. That was 15 years ago, and after that I never met him again. I must say here that each one of of us has an individual taste. This all is my opinion. There might be people who have liked Heeramandi more than Pakeezah.”

He concluded by saying, “I don’t know Sharmin. But no, I can’t relate to her statement on nothingness.” For the unversed, Sharmin, in an interview with ETimes stated that, “Meena Kumari was one of my inspirations. I tried to bring Meena Kumari’s nothingness from Pakeezah into my character in Heeramandi.”

Coming to the Netflix show, it is set against the backdrop of India’s independence struggle, and explores the lives of courtesans in Heera Mandi, Lahore, during the pre-partition era. The series boasts a star-studded cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, and Aditi Rao Hydari, and has been renewed for a second season.

BREAKING: CBFC passes two teasers of Rajkummar Rao-Shraddha Kapoor starrer Stree 2; expected to be out this week

The weekend went by spreading cheer among the industry and trade as Munjya performed beyond expectations, earning over Rs. 20 crores in its first three days of release. The horror comedy genre and its connection with the exciting Maddock Supernatural Universe, which also comprises Stree (2018) and Bhediya (2022), added to its hype. Munjya’s collections have given a boost to Stree 2, which already had considerable pre-release hype. And if all goes well, the teaser of the much-awaited sequel might come out sooner than expected.

On the day Munjya was released, that is, June 7, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) passed two teasers of Stree 2. While the first teaser is 1 minute and 23 seconds long, the other promo has a run time of 1 minute and 6 seconds. Both these teasers have been awarded with a U/A certificate.

Meanwhile, there’s a strong trade buzz that one of these teasers will drop digitally this month. A source told Bollywood Hungama, “The teaser will be released in June itself, that too this week, though the release of the film is almost 2 ½ months away. This promo of Stree 2 will give an idea as to what one can expect from the film this time.”

Stree starred Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor and marked the beginning of the Maddock Supernatural Universe. The horror comedy opened with a bang and went on to collect Rs. 129.90 crores at the domestic box office. Bhediya, meanwhile, featured Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon while Munjya starred Sharvari and Abhay Verma. Interestingly, Varun featured in an exciting cameo in Munjya while Rajkummar Rao was seen in a special appearance in Bhediya.

Stree 2 brings back Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor along with Pankaj Tripathi and Abhishek Banerjee. Directed by Amar Kaushik, it is slated to release in cinemas on August 30.

Noor Malabika Das, The Trial actress, found dead in her Mumbai apartment: Reports

Actor Noor Malabika Das, who was a known face in web shows, was found dead in her Mumbai apartment on Thursday. Das, a former air hostess with Qatar Airways and a native of Assam, was found in a decomposed state by the Mumbai police. She was 37 years old.

As per a report in NDTV, the discovery of Das’ body came after neighbours in her Lokhandwala residence noticed a foul odour emanating from her flat and alerted the authorities. Police officers, upon arrival, had to force their way into the apartment, where they found her lifeless body. There was a lack of any immediate signs of struggle or a suicide note, as reported. However, the collection of samples, including medicines and mobile phones, is expected to aid in piecing together the final moments of Das’ life.

An official has confirmed that an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been filed, and an autopsy has been conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Das’ untimely demise has left her family in a state of profound grief. Her elderly parents, who had visited her recently, have been unable to travel back to Mumbai due to the circumstances. In their absence, her friend and fellow actor Aloknath Pathak, along with the assistance of an NGO, took on the responsibility of her cremation.

Noor Malabika Das’s death has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry. She had recently gained prominence for her role alongside Bollywood star Kajol in the 2023 legal drama The Trial.

The All Indian Cine Workers Association has stepped forward, urging Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis to ensure a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding Das’s death.

Varun Dhawan will be moving into Hritik Roshan’s current Mumbai house, will become neighbour to Akshay Kumar and Sajid Nadiadwala

Both personally and professionally, actor Varun Dhawan is at a fantastic place. Along with his wife, designer Natasha Dalal, the actor recently became a father to a baby girl and is set to debut in the action genre with, Baby John, later this year. According to a recent information by Hindustan Times, Varun will now be adding a new home in this new stage of his journey.

According to information obtained by HT City, the actor has hired Hrithik Roshan’s current Juhu, Mumbai, home and plans to move in shortly. “Varun and Natasha will be shifting into this house with their daughter. It is a sea facing apartment, currently occupied by Hrithik, who in turn is moving to another apartment in the same location Juhu. VD and family will have actor Akshay Kumar and producer Sajid Nadiadwala as neighbours, who are residing in the same building,” quoted their source.

Varun married Natasha on January 24, 2021. The couple dated for quite a few years before exchanging wedding vows. The wedding was a close-knit affair attended by their close friends and family members. Varun Dhawan and Natasha Dalal announced their pregnancy in February this year. The actor shared an adorable monochrome picture on social media. In the picture, Varun is seen kissing Natasha’s baby bump.

Varun is set to star in the action thriller Baby John, directed by A Kaleeswaran and presented by Atlee in association with Jio Studios and Cine1 Studios. The actor will also appear in the Indian adaptation of the Hollywood series Citadel, opposite Samantha Ruth Prabhu from this and will also be seen in Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari.

On Sunday, a bus carrying pilgrims to the Shiv Khori temple in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district plunged into a deep gorge, resulting in at least 9 deaths and 33 injuries in a suspected terror attack. Bollywood stars took to social media to express their sorrow and pray for the victims of this tragic incident. Riteish Deshmukh was among the first from Bollywood to react. Posting on X, he wrote, “Heartbroken & devastated with the visuals of the Reasi terror attack. Prayers with the victims and families.”

Actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut also shared her thoughts on Instagram Stories, condemning the attack. “I strongly condemn the cowardly terrorist attack on the pilgrims in Reasi, Jammu & Kashmir. They were going for Vaishnodevi Darshan and terrorists open fired them only because they were Hindus. I pray for the departed and hope for the swift recovery of the injured. Om shanti,” she penned.

Anupam Kher expressed his grief and anger on X, stating, “Angry, pained and saddened by the cowardly attack on pilgrims in Reasi, Jammu! May Almighty give the loved ones of victims the strength to bear the pain and loss. Prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

Authorities quickly cordoned off the area to conduct a thorough investigation into the attack.
