SCOOP: Shoot of Akshay Kumar’s Marathi film Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat halted due to budget problems

In November 2022, the industry, trade and moviegoers when it came to light that Akshay Kumar had bagged a Marathi film. Moreover, the makers announced that the star will play Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the historical period flick titled Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat. A month later, Akshay dropped a short video of him as the great emperor and it immediately caught eyeballs. During the launch event, the makers announced that the film would be released on Diwali 2023. In September last year, there were reports that the film had been postponed. After that, there has been no update about the film.

Bollywood Hungama has learned that the status of Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat is in limbo. A source told us, “The shoot has been halted. This is because producer Vaseem Qureshi is facing budget problems.”

The source continued, “Around 50% of the shoot is completed. Akshay Kumar has a guest appearance and has shot for 3 days. He has also been paid a chunk of his fees.” It was, however, not clear if Akshay has completed his shoot or if he will be required to report back on the sets of Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat, once the filming resumes.

The source also said, “There’s no update on when the issues will get sorted and when the remainder of the shoot will get completed. And obviously, there’s no clarity on its release date either.” Bollywood Hungama tried contacting the spokesperson of Vaseem Qureshi but he was unavailable for comment.

Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat is directed by Mahesh Manjrekar and also stars his son Satya along with Pravin Tarde, Jay Dudhane, Hardik Joshi, Vishal Nikam, Utkarsh Shinde and Virat Madke. It is also going to be dubbed in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

An industry insider, however, commented, “These things happen. There’s no reason to press the panic button. It’s a big film, involving names like Akshay Kumar and Mahesh Manjrekar. I am sure the issues will get sorted and the shoot will resume soon. Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat has the potential to be a huge hit due to the subject, scale and of course Akshay’s starry presence.”

DDLJ’s ‘Tujhe Dekha’ voted as UK’s favourite 90s Bollywood song by BBC

The song ‘Tujhe Dekha’ from Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, lovingly called DDLJ by Indians and South Asians across the globe, has been voted as UK’s favourite 90s Bollywood song by BBC!

DDLJ is an all-time blockbuster in the history of Hindi cinema that made Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol India’s most-loved movie-stars for generations. DDLJ is still the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema and it’s still playing every day at the iconic Maratha Mandir Theatre in Mumbai.

BBC’s Asian Network invited listeners to choose The Ultimate 90s Bollywood Song from a list of 50 contenders. A panel made up of the station’s presenters Haroon Rashid, Nikita Kanda, Gagan Grewal and Nadia Ali, plus industry experts Asim Burney, Amrita Tanna, and Karan Pangali chose the shortlist.

It included song and dance numbers such as ‘Ole Ole’ from the film Yeh Dillagi to ballads like ‘Bahon Ke Darmiyan’, from Khamoshi: The Musical. However. the winner was by unanimous choice ‘Tujhe Dekha’, from the 1995 blockbuster.

DDLJ, as we all know, tells the story of Raj, played by legendary actor Shah Rukh Khan, and Simran, played by actress Kajol. The two are Indians living in London who meet and fall in love against Simran’s family’s wishes.

‘Tujhe Dekha’ features the couple in a field full of yellow mustard plants – a visual that is iconic to India’s pop culture of the 90’s. This scene is still referenced by films that are being made in the country due to its huge nostalgic impact.

‘Tujhe Dekho’ has been sung by Kumar Sanu and the legendary Lata Mangeshkar and is one of the most played songs across music streaming platforms for decades.

In a surprising turn of events, that is causing a stir in the showbiz world, actress Kangana Ranaut has stepped up to defend Raveena Tandon. Kangana chose Instagram Stories to share her views on the matter, labeling it as “disturbing.”

For the unversed, the whole drama unfolded with allegations flying around about Raveena Tandon being involved in an attack on three women. The accusations pointed fingers at the actress’ driver supposedly hitting the women with their car. But, the footage came to the rescue and proved these claims dead wrong.

Sharing her thoughts, Kangana Ranaut vented out saying, “What happened to Raveena Tandon ji is absolutely alarming; had there been 5-6 more people in the opposite group, she would have been lynched; we condemn such road rage outbursts; those people must be reprimanded. They must not get away with such violent and poisonous behaviour.”

Truth behind Raveena Tandon’s viral video
Speaking of the matter, Raveena Tandon put out an official statement from Mumbai Police. According to a senior police source in an interview with Mid-Day: “The complainant gave a false complaint in the alleged video. We checked the entire CCTV footage of the society and found that the actress’s driver was reversing the car from the road into the society when this family was crossing the same lane. The family stopped the car and told the driver that he should check if people are behind the car before reversing. This argument started between them.”

Elaborating further, “This argument escalated into abusive language, and actress Raveena Tandon arrived at the spot to check what had happened with her driver. The actress tried to protect the driver from the mob; however, the mob started abusing her. Both Raveena Tandon and the family went to the Khar police station and gave written complaints. Voters in Bihar get 50 % off on movie tickets

If you have cast your vote in Bihar on June I, you are in for a treat. One of the reasons why the new releases opened well this week was the ticket pricing of Rs. 99 across the board for all titles.

Now in an unprecedented move in Bihar, the movie theatres have been instructed to give a 50 percent discount on a movie ticket to every person who voted on Saturday during the Lok Sabha elections.

Informed Kumar Abhishek, Cinema Manger Connplex Patna, “We’ve been asked to provide a 50 percent discount at voters from Sunday onwards. This means the boost in footfalls will continue this weekend.”

Sharan Sharma’s Mr & Mrs Mahi has opened to an impressive Rs. 6 crore-plus on Friday while Abhinay Deo’s Savi has accrued around Rs 2 crores on Day 1. The numbers are expected to improve even more on Sunday.

Said Kumar Abhishek, “Even the earlier releases Srikanth, Laapataa Ladies and Bhaiyya Ji are showing decent collections. But not to the extent that the movie business should start celebrating. The monetary incentives to get audiences into theatres work only if the product is good. This week’s releases have been liked by those who have seen them. Now we need the fence sitters to take the plunge.”

Significantly, the entire publicity of Savi is shouldered by its leading lady Divya Khossla. Anil Kapoor, who plays a pivotal role and who was paid a hefty amount for agreeing to star in Savi, has refused to do any promotional activity.

Roy Kapur Films announce biopic on India’s first Chief Election Commissioner Sukumar Sen

Siddharth Roy Kapur’s production house Roy Kapur Films (RKF) is known for backing unique and differentiated stories, and after the huge success of Rocket Boys, it plans to bring alive the untold story of another Indian hero. Roy Kapur Films along with Trickitainment Media, has acquired the rights to produce a biopic on the life of Sukumar Sen, India’s first Chief Election Commissioner and the architect behind the country’s first general elections in 1951-52, which cemented India’s status as a newly minted independent democracy.

A brilliant mathematician turned civil servant, Sukumar Sen played a crucial role in India’s transition from a British colony to a democratic republic, surpassing what anyone could have imagined at the dawn of independence and creating a lasting and exemplary electoral system. His biggest challenge in a young nation that had never experienced an election before, was to execute the entire process within just two years of the country becoming a republic on January 26th, 1950, resulting in ‘the biggest experiment in democracy in human history’, in his own words. No Indian official had ever before confronted a challenge of such magnitude.

Sukumar Sen’s job was mind-boggling in its complexity: to organize the largest democratic exercise in the world in a land of three million square kilometres; across varied terrains of mountains, deserts and forests; with an electorate of 175 million people, 85 per cent of whom were illiterate and dispersed across thousands of cities, towns and villages in 565 princely kingdoms and numerous newly formed states. At stake were as many as 4,500 seats – about 500 for Parliament and the rest for the provincial assemblies. In a poor country, only recently independent and just coming into its own, 224,000 polling booths were constructed and equipped with 2 million steel ballot boxes for which 8,200 tonnes of steel were consumed; 16,500 clerks were appointed on six-month contracts to type and collate the electoral rolls by constituency; 380,000 reams of paper were used for printing the rolls and 389,816 phials of ink were used; 56,000 presiding officers were chosen to supervise the voting, aided by another 280,000 helpers; and 224,000 policemen were put on duty to guard against violence and intimidation!

In remote hill villages, bridges had to be constructed to facilitate access to voters and for small islands in the Indian Ocean, naval vessels had to be used to transport electoral rolls to booths. Tribals from some forest districts came to the booths with their bows and arrows proudly achieving as much as 70 per cent turnout at one booth in the jungle, while a neighbouring booth was visited only by an elephant and two panthers! Dedicated citizens wanting to exercise their franchise reached booths after days of trekking through wild jungles, camping at night amid songs and dances around the fire.

After all the votes were counted, Sukumar Sen and his team’s herculean efforts had led to approximately 60 percent of registered voters exercising their right to vote for the very first time in their lives. Against all the odds, India’s first general election was a milestone in the history of democracy and the largest election the world had ever seen.

Announcing this inspiring biopic on the eve of the counting day of India’s 18th General Elections, the makers seek to remind audiences of the sheer ambition and audacity behind the country’s first and the world’s largest electoral process that we now take for granted, and for which Sukumar Sen laid the foundation.

Sharing his thoughts about the biopic, producer Siddharth Roy Kapur stated, “We are so honoured to bring to life the incredible story of one of our national heroes Sukumar Sen, who played a crucial role in shaping India’s democratic history. From the very system of identifying political parties by different symbols and colours in order to combat illiteracy to coming up with the idea of indelible ink on fingernails to avoid voter impersonation…so many of his innovations are in place even today! His contribution to laying the architecture for our democratic process deserves to be celebrated and we look forward to bringing audiences in India and around the world this thrilling story of our very first election and the amazing man behind it.”

“We firmly believe that Sukumar Sen’s legendary and historically significant story, filled with monumental and dramatic moments, will resonate with all Indian citizens who exercise the right to vote. Told after 73 years, it is a must-see for all generations across the nation,” said Romanchak Arora from Trickitainment Media

“One of India’s greatest successes as a nation has been its successful democracy. The foundation of all democracies is free and fair elections and the credit for laying the bedrock for this vibrant electoral process must go to Sukumar Sen, my grandfather and the 1st CEC of Independent India. I wish the producers all the success to portray the untold story of an unsung hero of this great nation.” said Sen’s grandson Sanjiv Sen.

“I congratulate the producers and wish them all success in their endeavour. This is a laudable effort to make the people of our country aware of a remarkable person and his achievements.” added his second grandson Debdatta Sen.
