Box Office: Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Vijay Deverakonda’s loss is Tom Cruise’s gain; Top Gun: Maverick SUCCESSFULLY completes 100 days; replaces Laal Singh Chaddha, Raksha Bandhan, Liger in several multiplexes

In today’s times, when films are failing left, right and centre at the Indian box office, Top Gun: Maverick has proved to be an exception. The Tom Cruise-starrer released on May 26, 2022 by Viacom18 Studios, and has completed 100 days in cinemas today, on September 2! And believe it or not, it’s still going super-strong in several centres. In fact, scan the ticketing apps on weekends and don’t be surprised if you see the shows of Top Gun: Maverick fast-filling or even sold out!

Top Gun: Maverick is the sequel to the cult 1986 film, Top Gun, which also starred Tom Cruise. Interestingly, it was released on a non-holiday Thursday and shows were cancelled on the first day due to a lack of an audience. But slowly and steadily, it picked up due to terrific word of mouth. Though the collections haven’t crossed even the Rs. 1 crore mark since week 7, the consistency with which its drawing audiences is a feat.

A source from the exhibition sector told Bollywood Hungama, “Top Gun: Maverick is not a film that you’ll enjoy watching on your TV screen or mobile. You have to watch it on the big screen. This is a major factor that enticed viewers to cinemas. Yet, no one was prepared that the film would go on for so long. This was one of the most reliable films for many theatres in the metro cities. Kisi aur film ke liye log aaye ya na aaye, iss film ke liye zaroor aate hai.”

The source continued, “Every week, many theatres would discontinue playing the film or shift it to a smaller auditorium, presuming that it’ll fall in the presence of films like Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan, Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha or Vijay Deverakonda’s Liger. However, come Sunday or Monday, Top Gun: Maverick’s shows could increase, and it’ll even be played in the biggest screen of the multiplex, while shows of the big Hindi films would be reduced or shifted to 100 or 200 seater screens.”

Bollywood Hungama last week checked that from Monday, August 29, Top Gun: Maverick was playing in four shows a day in Mumbai’s PVR Lower Parel, in the biggest screen, replacing Liger. In PVR Oberoi Mall Goregaon East, the film was played in the PXL auditorium, which has a vast screen, with two shows a day.

A theatre staffer who commented on the condition of anonymity revealed, “In the Independence Day week, we had discontinued 1 show of Laal Singh Chaddha and 3 shows of Raksha Bandhan and replaced it with Top Gun: Maverick. This was done 2 or 3 days after the release of the Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar starrer.”

Some interesting trends were also noticed with the box office performance of Top Gun: Maverick. In Week 10 (when Ek Villain Returns had been released), it collected more (Rs. 0.56 crores) than in Week 9 (Rs. 0.49 crores). In Week 12, which is when Raksha Bandhan and Laal Singh Chaddha had been released, its collections were the same as Week 11, that is, Rs. 0.32 crores. Meanwhile, Bengaluru city has done exceptionally well and at times, it was collecting more than Mumbai!

The collections of Top Gun: Maverick till date in India are around Rs. 37.24 crores. This means that it has collected more than films like Shahid Kapoor’s sports drama Jersey (Rs. 19.68 cr) Tiger Shroff’s actioner Heropanti 2 (24.45 cr), Ajay Devgn’s aviation thriller Runway 34 (32.96 cr), Ranveer Singh’s social comedy Jayeshbhai Jordaar (15.59 cr) and R Madhavan-starrer Rocketry – The Nambi Effect (26.05 cr).

Needless to say, the exhibitors are happy. Puneet Gupta, AVP – Corporate Communications, Inox Leisure Limited, said, “Top Gun: Maverick is performing very well. A big reason is that its target audience was huge. The current generation wanted to see it and meanwhile, those who had seen the first part in the late 90s were also curious to check it out. Hence, it got great footfalls.”

Akshaye Rathi, a film exhibitor and distributor, remarked, “Not just India, it’s among the top five grossers worldwide. It is a film with scale and spectacular value but it’s not an Avatar or Avengers: Endgame in terms of grandeur. Yet, purely on the merit of the storytelling, stardom of Tom Cruise and larger-than-life appeal, it has managed to sustain and thrive in cinemas.”

Globally, Top Gun: Maverick has collected $1.4 billion and is thus the highest-grossing film of 2022. It is also the second film released during the COVID-19 pandemic to gross $1 billion (after Spider-Man: No Way Home), and the highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise ever.

Top Gun: Maverick is now in its 15th week. Due to the consistent demand and lack of releases, it’ll even be played once again in IMAX screens from today.

The source signed of by saying, “It’ll have a dream run this week before Brahmastra arrives on September 9. Few people in the business believe that after the release of Brahmastra, it’ll have negligible collections. But many are not ready to buy it. Yeh picture ka kuch bhi nahi bol sakte. At the rate at which it’s going, don’t be stunned if it even completes 25 weeks!”

Top Gun: Maverick collections till date in India:
Week 1: 17.70 cr
Week 2: 7 cr
Week 3: 3.30 cr
Week 4: 2.75 cr
Week 5: 1.75 cr
Week 6: 1.25 cr
Week 7: 0.75 cr
Week 8: 0.55 cr
Week 9: 0.49 cr
Week 10: 0.56 cr
Week 11: 0.32 cr
Week 12: 0.32 cr
Week 13: 0.27 cr
Week 14: 0.23 cr*
TOTAL: 37.24 cr*

*Estimates. Final numbers awaited

Amazon spending over Rs. 2000 crore on Russo Brothers’ Amazon series Citadel starring Richard Madden & Priyanka Chopra due to cost overruns, reshoots

Citadel, Amazon’s passion project, executive produced by director duo Joe and Anthony Russo, has reportedly undergone major creative changes with costs spiralling and due to the expensive reshoots. The show is now on track to becoming the second-most expensive show ever made.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, there were “differences in vision led to the exit of half the creative team and has forced the show — a spy thriller that is meant to launch local spinoffs — into a round of expensive reshoots. Now the series is on track to become the second-most expensive television show ever made, after its initial $160 million budget is now having to add a reported $75 due to reshoots.”

As shared by Comic Book publication, Citadel, was first announced to be in the works in 2020, with Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas set as leading stars.

Amazon Studios had reportedly already ordered several local spinoffs for the series, which would follow spies having their own adventures in Italy, India, and Mexico. According to the report, creative differences began to arise after filming on Citadel wrapped in December, with Amazon reportedly having “some reservations about early footage.”

As weeks passed by, other project commitments had whittled down the creative camps to two opposing forces, Joe Russo and Josh Appelbaum, who was the series’ showrunner leading to Appelbaum’s exit. The Russos’ production company, AGBO, is reportedly now in charge of Citadel, hiring Hunters’ David Weil to rewrite the show, and cinematographer Thomas Sigel to direct the reshoots. The show is reportedly now in post-production.

SCOOP: Hrithik Roshan REJECTS Brahmastra 2 due to Krrish 4 & Ramayana

Bollywood Hungama was the first to report that Hrithik Roshan was offered to play a key role in the Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer Brahmastra. The superstar was offered the lead role in Brahmastra 2 – Dev. However, now we can inform our readers that Hrithik has rejected the offer and his reason is very valid.

SCOOP Hrithik Roshan REJECTS Brahmastra 2 due to Krrish 4 & Ramayana

“Hrithik is already doing two high-on visual effects films – Krrish 4 and Ramayana. He felt, that doing Brahmastra 2 would mean too much of a time investment on another VFX-heavy film. This decade, he wants to do more films and he doesn’t want to end up spending the next 7 years on these 3 dream projects. He informed his thought to Ayan and Karan, and politely let go of the offer,” revealed a source close to the development to Bollywood Hungama.

The team is now looking for an actor to play the role of Dev in the second part. It’s a role that requires a certain amount of aura and hence, it would be interesting to see who is the next best bet for the team of Brahmastra. The movie is confirmed to release on September 9 and we expect the advance bookings to open within the next 3 to 4 days.

The Ayan Mukerji directorial also stars Amitabh Bachchan and Nagarjuna in key roles.
