Set against the backdrop of South India, amid the film is facing backlash and non-cooperation from theatre owners, the Sudipto Sen directorial has decided to also release in overseas market. If reports are to be believed, the film will release in United Kingdom and France this week itself.

As per recent reports, The Kerala Story is making its debut in UK and France on May 12. With Adah Sharma playing the role of Shalini Unnikrishnan, The Kerala Story is produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. The film portrays the story of young South Indian girls who are manipulated into converting their religion and are forcibly made to join the ISIS. While the film is said to be based on true events, a lot of allegations are being made against the film because of its story. The film released in India last week, on May 5, 2023.

Vipul Shah, Sudipto Sen to go to court against Tamil Nadu multiplexes

Earlier today, reports surfaced that multiplex owners in Tamil Nadu had decided to remove The Kerala Story from the movie theatres. This decision of theatre owners of Tamil Nadu, has left producer Vipul Shah and director Sudipto Sen in a state of shock and bemusement.

Shock, because the decision to ban a film by theatre owners is not only illegal but also a contravention of the very basic democratic right to freedom of expression. Bemusement, because this hasty decision to shove a controversial film under the carpet shows how insecure certain sections are getting about the film which is growing at the box office with every day.

The Kerala Story Controversy: Theatre owners stop screening of the film and remove it from listings online

The Kerala Story has been facing quite a bit of backlash in the Southern regions owing to its plotline. Set in Kerala, the film showcases women from Hindu and Christian communities being manipulated and converted into Islam and being forced to join the ISIS. The film has not gone down well with certain Southern regions in the country, and it seems that theatre owners in places like Chennai have decided to stop the screening of the film.

As per recent reports, the theatre owners have claimed that the screening of The Kerala Story will be impacting the screening of other films. In a statement given by a member of the Theatres Owners Association to NDTV, it is said, “Due to law-and-order concerns, other films shown in multiplexes that screen this movie suffer. It affects our income. That’s why this decision.” From what we hear, many theatres have stopped online booking of the film and have removed it from their screening lists. The decision comes after Madras High Court dismissed a plea seeking ban on the film.

While the film claimed that about 32,000 women are being converted into Islamic religion as per the first teaser of the film, the makers were forced to change it to three women after many bashed the film over its ‘false’ claims. The Left Wing in Kerala too expressed its disappointment over the film and many from the state have asserted that the portrayal and the film’s plot is false and that it aims at promoting communal hatred.

The Kerala Story is directed by Sudipto Sen and stars Adah Sharma in the lead role along with Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Inani, Sonia Balani, Pranav Mishra, among others playing pivotal roles. The film was released last week, on May 5, 2023.

Yash Raj Films to distribute Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jawan in overseas

Shah Rukh Khan has had a long standing relationship with Yash Raj Films. He shared a close bond with the late legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, who founded the studio. His friendship with his son and filmmaker Aditya Chopra is also well-known. SRK’s relationship with the banner became even stronger earlier this year with the stupendous success of Pathaan, which went onto become a global blockbuster.

SRK’s next Jawan is directed by Atlee and produced by the former’s banner Red Chillies Entertainment, instead of YRF. However, Jawan will also have a Yash Raj Film connection as the banner has decided to come on board as distributors of the film in international markets.

Jawan has been in the news all this week because the makers decided to postpone the film from its earlier release date June 2. Bollywood Hungama reported that the film will be pushed to September because it needs time to work on its VFX. Yesterday, the makers of Jawan themselves revealed that the film will now be released on September 7. The reshuffling of the film ensured that a few other big movies too had to delay their release.

Jawan is the first collaboration between Shah Rukh and Atlee. The film also stars Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara and Sanya Malhotra in pivotal roles.
