Sharad Kelkar reflects on his journey from stammering to voicing Baahubali; says, “My life changed after…”

Actor Sharad Kelkar recently opened about his role in the upcoming Disney+ Hotstar animated series Baahubali: Crown of Blood. Promoting the series in Hyderabad alongside SS Rajamouli and the team, Kelkar discussed the intricate process of dubbing for the series and how it felt to voice the titular character again. He has previously lent his voice to Prabhas’ character in the immensely popular Baahubali films.

Sharad Kelkar expressed his gratitude and nervousness while sharing the stage with Rajamouli for the first time, saying, “I am nervous because I’m sharing the stage with Rajamouli sir for the first time. I have to thank him for making me the voice of Baahubali. My life changed after the films were released. From being a boy from a small town who had a stammer to becoming the voice of Baahubali, it has been a journey.” Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledged the unexpected love his voice received and described his return to the role for the animated series as a homecoming.

Despite his familiarity with the character, Kelkar noted the challenges of dubbing for Baahubali without having Prabhas as a reference this time. He admitted, “I didn’t have Prabhas as a reference this time, like I did the last time. It was difficult. But I kept thinking how he would do it, how he would say something, and that helped me dub for it. Hopefully, the audience will like it.” His confidence and trust in the new team played a significant role in his performance.

Baahubali: Crown of Blood will stream on Disney+ Hotstar from May 17, offering a dark chapter in the history of the Mahishmati kingdom that shaped the futures of Baahubali and Bhallaladeva. SS Rajamouli highlighted that the series’ events occur during the timeline of the Baahubali films, adding depth to the beloved story. With Rajamouli’s vision and Sharad Devaranjan as the show’s creator, the series aims to captivate audiences once again.

The source stated, “The workshops were designed to help both Ahan and Pooja to truly understand the complexities of their characters.” The source also went on to reveal, “Since Sanki is Ahan’s second film, it’s crucial for the directors and Sajid Sir that he perfectly embodies the role.” While the film will have thrilling action scenes and other exciting parts, it is being said that the main focus is on the acting. “The action is there but, in the end, a strong performance is what makes a film great,” the source explained.

Anurag Kashyap defends Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal; says, “People will realize the film’s impact in 5-10 years from now”

Anurag Kashyap recently shared his admiration for Sandeep Reddy Vanga and his 2023 film, Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor. In a conversation on his daughter Aaliyah Kashyap’s podcast, Young, Dumb & Anxious, he addressed his support for the film, which has been both celebrated and criticized. Aaliyah expressed her disappointment, calling Animal a ‘horrible’ and ‘misogynistic’ film, to which Anurag responded with a nuanced perspective.

Kashyap explained his appreciation for Vanga after a long conversation with the filmmaker. “I met him (Sandeep Reddy Vanga) and I liked him. I like the guy. I’ve had questions of my own and I wanted to talk to him about his film (Animal) and I invited him, and I had a long five-hour conversation and I like the guy… I always believe in talking to people. I was cancelled after Dev D (2009) by a lot of people for making a ‘misogynistic’ film… I have often seen people isolating someone, attacking someone and that is not the way to be,” he said.

Highlighting the film’s impact on the industry, Kashyap said, “This man (Sandeep), what you see is what he is. People may like Animal, they may not like Animal, but Animal is a major tectonic shift in the way films will be made. People will realize its impact in 5-10 years from now. Post Animal, every action movie looks fake. When you see, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (Starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff), all those flips and fighting, it all looks fake because somehow the action in that film (Animal) and the use of music in that film had an impact, the technical details in the film had an impact on the audience. That will forever impact cinema.”

In January 2024, Kashyap shared photos on Instagram of his meeting with Vanga, describing him as “the most misunderstood, judged and reviled filmmaker at the moment” and praised his honesty and vulnerability. Kashyap noted that Vanga was open to discussing criticisms of his film, writing, “This is a person you can actually confront and talk to. Please talk to him about the problems you have with the film… The biggest game changer of Hindi cinema in the longest time and a film whose impact (good or bad), can’t be denied. And the filmmaker who takes it all on his chin. Great evening spent with him.”

Amar Singh Chamkila: Delhi High Court reveals Netflix paid Rs. 45.16 crore to license Diljit Dosanjh – Parineeti Chopra starrer: Report

A lawsuit between Super Cassettes Industries Private Limited (SCIPL) and Reliance Entertainment Studios Private Limited (Reliance) threatened to delay the release of the highly anticipated film Amar Singh Chamkila on Netflix which arrived on the platform on April 12. Back in April 2024, it was reported that the crux of the dispute revolved around a loan agreement and SCIPL’s claim on the film’s revenues, which was earlier reported by several publications.

According to the Indian Kanoon Organisation website, SCIPL financed Reliance’s production of eleven Hindi films, extending a loan of Rs. 268 crores. The agreement stipulated a lien and charge on the revenues generated by these films, including future productions undertaken by Reliance, either independently or collaboratively. Further modifications through communication solidified SCIPL’s right to recover Rs. 168 crores spent on the production of six films, along with the cost of capital.

SCIPL alleged that Reliance defaulted on repayment, prompting them to file a suit seeking recovery of Rs. 60,23,73,358. This figure encompasses the principal amount, cost of capital, and revenue components as outlined in the loan agreement. To enforce their lien and prevent further financial losses, SCIPL requested the Court to restrain Reliance from releasing any new films until the dues were settled.

Initially, Reliance demonstrated a spirit of cooperation by assuring the Court they would refrain from releasing films or transferring related rights for two weeks. However, SCIPL raised concerns upon learning about Reliance’s plans to release five films, including Amar Singh Chamkila, which was slated for release on Netflix on April 12, 2024.

During the initial hearing, SCIPL aimed to prevent the film’s release altogether. However, their strategy shifted, and they narrowed their focus to demanding a deposit of Rs. 42.16 crores. This amount represented the sum Reliance received from Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, an affiliate of Netflix.

Reliance vehemently opposed the deposit, arguing that SCIPL’s request exceeded the scope of the application and that they hadn’t been given a fair chance to respond. They further contended that “Amar Singh Chamkila” was produced by Window Seat Films LLP (WSF), a separate entity where Reliance held a 99.99% stake. As evidence, Reliance presented promotional materials listing them as a producer and statements made by their Group CEO describing the film as “Reliance Entertainment’s next.”

SCIPL countered these claims by highlighting inconsistencies. They pointed out that Reliance admitted to producing the film in their reply to an application filed before a Civil Judge in Ludhiana. Additionally, promotional materials for Amar Singh Chamkila on Netflix identified Reliance as a producer. Reliance defended their stance by arguing that the Ludhiana suit pleadings were filed on behalf of WSF and that the role of a producer, as defined by the Copyright Act, is attributed to the party taking initiative and responsibility for creating the work.

To further bolster their case, SCIPL questioned the legitimacy of the License Agreement between Reliance and WSF. This agreement allegedly granted Reliance the right to sub-license WSF-produced content to third parties, with Reliance earning a mere 2% commission and no share in the licensing fee. SCIPL viewed this as a strategic move to circumvent their claim on future film revenues. Additionally, they argued that the Content License Agreement and its amendments between Netflix and Reliance concerning “Amar Singh Chamkila” suggested a principal-to-principal relationship, implying Reliance’s role as the producer.

SCIPL emphasized the risk of their claims being rendered futile if Reliance were allowed to spend the Netflix revenue before a court order is issued. They argued that the outstanding dues and Reliance’s admission of SCIPL’s lien on future films satisfied the tests of balance of convenience and irreparable harm.

Reliance countered by emphasizing WSF’s role as the independent producer. They presented evidence that WSF secured the rights to produce the biopic and received recognition as the producer by the Indian Film and TV Producers Council. Additionally, the film certification application listed Imtiaz Ali, a partner at Window Seat Picture LLP (a WSF stakeholder), as the producer. The License Agreement, according to Reliance, simply authorized them to sub-license content produced by WSF, making them a facilitator rather than the primary producer.

Initially, SCIL sought to delay Amar Singh Chamkila’s release but later demanded Rs 42.16 crore Reliance received from Netflix’s affiliate.

“Sharad Kelkar was given a mere Rs. 101 for his role in Srikanth,” reveals director Tushar Hiranandani

In a recent interview with ETimes, Tushar Hiranandani, director Srikanth, made a surprising revelation regarding the fee charged by actor Sharad Kelkar. Known for his powerful performances in films like Goliyon Ki Raasleela-Ram Leela and Mohenjo Daro, Kelkar has a significant presence in both Hindi cinema and television. However, for his role in Srikanth, Sharad Kelkar accepted a mere Rs. 101 as his fee.

Hiranandani explained that initially, Kelkar demanded a substantial amount, reflecting his deserved market rate. However, after listening to the film’s narration, Kelkar was so moved by the story and the opportunity that he decided to join the project despite the financial constraints. Tushar recounted, “When Sharad came to meet me, there was a price he quoted, and he deserves it also. But then I told him that it was difficult for me and requested him to listen to the narration.”

The director further shared that it was Kelkar’s enthusiasm for the role that led to the unexpectedly low fee. The next day, producer Bhushan Kumar informed Hiranandani of Kelkar’s willingness to be part of the film at any cost. Kelkar’s character, Ravi, appears post-interval and plays a crucial role in the story. Hiranandani emphasized, “Sharad enters the film post interval and guess the fee on his Srikanth contract? It is just Rs 101! In reality, Ravi is the man behind the success of Srikanth Bolla.”

Kelkar’s journey in the industry has not been without challenges. In a candid conversation with Siddharth Kannan, he opened about his past anger management issues, revealing a significant incident that led to surgery and a changed demeanor. Also, he struggled with a severe stammering issue early in his career, which he overcame with the support of his wife, Keerti Gaekwad. In a podcast with Maniesh Paul, he credited her with helping him through his most difficult times. “Then I met my wife. I am also lucky to have met a few wonderful people from my first show, who also helped me overcome it,” he said.

Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par cuts Delhi shoot short due to expense; Raid 2 shifts filming from Delhi to Lucknow amidst soaring costs: Report

Aamir Khan is bringing Christmas cheer this year with his upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par. This project promises to be both emotionally resonant and entertaining. Marking Khan’s return to socially conscious cinema, the film tackles the challenges and triumphs of individuals with Down syndrome. Based on the Spanish sports dramedy Campeones, Sitaare Zameen Par is directed by RS Prasanna and began filming earlier this year. The movie is slated for a Christmas release.

The story revolves around Khan, playing a headstrong but ultimately kind-hearted basketball coach. As part of his community service, he’s tasked with leading a Special Olympics basketball team. This team is anything but ordinary – it’s brimming with talented individuals with diverse learning disabilities. News from the sets hints at a captivating narrative centred around the Paralympic Games, a prestigious international sporting event for differently-abled athletes.

Earlier, it was reported that the actor and the team would head to New Delhi for the shoot. However, there’s a twist! Filming in Delhi, the capital of India has become significantly expensive. According to a report in Hindustan Times, the shooting permits for iconic locations like the Rajiv Chowk metro station or the international airport come with hefty price tags. Due to these rising costs, Sitaare Zameen Par’s Delhi schedule has been significantly reduced. Originally planned for a month, the shoot will now be condensed to just 8-10 days in July. The team will likely recreate some Delhi scenes in other locations like Lucknow or Madhya Pradesh to stay within budget.

A source previously revealed to the publication that the film was to be shot extensively in Delhi, with iconic locations like Lal Qila (Red Fort), Lodhi Garden, Purani Dilli (Old Delhi), and Tyagraj Stadium serving as backdrops. “The schedule is set for one month, between May and June. The children will indulge in various Paralympic Games for the shoot. The schedule is set for one month, between May and June. The children will indulge in various Paralympic Games for the shoot,” the source said, adding, “It will be shot at different spots in Delhi, including Lal Qila, Lodhi Garden, Purani Dilli, and Tyagraj stadium. It is being shot in various parts of Delhi, as they don’t want all the kids to travel to NCR regions.”

Directed by RS Prasanna, the movie began filming in February 2024 and is slated to hit theatres by Christmas.

Interestingly, a few weeks ago, Bollywood Hungama reported Ajay Devgn starrer Raid 2 completed its final schedule in New Delhi. Interestingly, Raid 2 went on floors early this year, on January 6, 2024. The source continued, “The makers had meticulously planned the shoot. Everything went as per the plan and in less than four months, the shooting will conclude.” Besides Delhi and Lucknow, Raid 2 was also filmed in Mumbai and Rajasthan.

However, Hindustan Times reports that Ajay Devgn starrer also opted a similar module to cut down on the costs. “They shot in the city for four days, including India Gate, and then 47 days in Lucknow. Atleast 20-25 films in today’s time are being shot in Lucknow because of the subsidies and quick permissions,” a person from the production said.

Both Raid and Raid 2 are directed by Raj Kumar Gupta. It is all set to release in cinemas on November 15 this year. Raid 2 is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Kumar Mangat Pathak, Abhishek Pathak and Krishan Kumar. The film is presented by Gulshan Kumar and T-Series and is a Panorama Studios production.
